Links of London canopy

Across from the property is the historic LaVue House, on the National Register of Historic Places. Links of London George Lester and broker Fitz Johnson bought the business park and more than 800 acres for $2.275 million in 2000, and they immediately mentioned the site as a possible location for VRE station. The most recent county assessment valued the land at $3.9 million. Golden estimated that the Links of London Z Charm and VRE would have to fund $20 million worth of improvements on a VRE station that would provide at least a decade of use. Early estimates are that the county's portion would be $6 million for a building 1,000-vehicle parking lot, buying the land, building a canopy and improving access to the site. Several phases of building are planned for the VRE station, Golden said, including a parking garage and walking bridge to allow riders to safely cross the Links of London Y Charm. In 2005, voters approved a transportation bond package that included $12.9 million for a VRE station. Golden said the county will consider numerous funding options and may not have to borrow money. VRE has to design and construct a third track to the Spotsylvania station. Supervisors made no comments about the plan before they voted 5-1 to move ahead with creating a preliminary site plan and negotiating with the property owner. The appraisal of the land the county will need to buy will be done using the Federal Transit Authority process. Supervisor T.C. Waddy, who has consistently opposed the commuter rail service, Links of London X Charm no. Supervisor Gary Jackson was absent.
